The wait will go on...much longer...

HDB must be having a huge amount of transactions going on right now. After waiting 1-2 long months and exhausting the full OTP time frame, our application was finally submitted and we got our first appointment...IN AUGUST! That's another 8 weeks away and there's no earlier date available. After that appointment, we still have to wait another 6-8 weeks before the sale is completed. It would be October or November before we're able to start renovations. *sigh* we can't wait!

Furniture Store Review

We have very graciously decided to do a review of furniture stores that we have been to in Singapore so as to help those who are looking, just like we are. Because we currently have time and ready transport available, we went to so many stores, some of which most decent stylanistas would never dream of stepping in. In any case, we will present the best and worst, the cheapest and most expensive places that you can buy your furniture from, so that you can better make your decision when you are in need of new furniture for your home.

*** Note: we were specifically looking for sofas, with little attention paid to dining items, coffee table, etc ***

1. Objet | Amoy Street
Were they nice and friendly? Not too bad, the guy was accomodating and answered all our queries without being too eager to close the deal. "No obligation" type of store.
How does the store look? Stylish and very nice dim lighting, nice music and the faint smell of leather and new materials.
Value for money? Not very cheap (1.8k to 3k+), but value for money considering you get customised items and designer looks. Choose materials for the external and internal parts and complete the look with stylish lamps that Objet sells too.

2. Massimmo | Sime Darby Enterprise Centre, Bukit Merah
Were they nice and friendly? Very friendly and nice lady who served us, told us everything about their company, designs and materials, and wrote down the sizes and prices for us too. Encouraged us to lock in a deal before the GST increase and offered to negotiate a better price for us when we wanted to confirm.
How does the store look? A big room with sunshine streaming in big windows and the nice smell of aromatherapy.
Value for money? A tad bit pricey. Almost all their sofas are sold in modules, so to make a decent-sized 4 seater or L shape, you require 2 modules which cost 1.8 - 2k+ each piece.

3. OM | Nobel House, Joo Seng Road and Liang Court
Were they nice and friendly? The staff at Nobel House are usually smiling and on-hand to assist, although sometimes a bit too over-enthusiastic. Staff at Liang Court usually leave you alone until you catch their eye to get assistance. However, due to the immense size of the showroom, it can be quite difficult to find them sometimes.
How does the store look? The Nobel House showroom is just a level on a warehouse kinda thing, but the Liang Court one is quite nice and inviting.
Value for money? OM can be a bit pricey at 2-3k but their sofas tend to also be larger in size, which would not fit an HDB flat too nicely. Their Pelle full leather range looks very well maid but with a matching price tag of course...

4. Home2Be | Nobel House, Joo Seng Road and Liang Court
Were they nice and friendly? The salesman at Nobel House was a bit irritating, following us around the showroom and urging us to confirm that weekend because there was a sale. They didn't even have the model that I liked from Liang Court but he told me that it was an outdated model. The salespeople at Liang Court were better. The first time we went, the guy answered all our queries, measured sizes for us, showed us fabric samples and encouraged us to buy before the GST increase but wasn't too pushy. The second time we went, there was only ONE salesman in the entire store and he tried to juggle 3 sets of customers at one time. We couldn't wait for him to speak to us but when we passed him, he apologised and told us to approach him should we need anything.
How does the store look? Big, bright and like one huge store filled with sofas and other furniture items.
Value for money? Definitely. Things are cheaper here although workmanship looks a bit more shoddy. L shape sofas for $1299 before delivery and GST, and you can get sofas under 1k.

5. Luxurhome/Lush | Bedok North/Paya Lebar
Were they nice and friendly? Hmm....staff ignore you here. Feel free to browse and not talk to any of them. They won't bother you or greet you with a smile even.
How does the store look? The new Paya Lebar showroom is very nice. Dim lighting, huge windows at the end of the room and nice layouts of sofas, dining tables, beds and other chairs.
Value for money? Expensive without discounts, expect to pay 2.5k and up for designer-copies. They even copy iconic chairs like the Eames lounge chair, the diamond chair, egg chair etc...

6. Lorenzo | Sims Drive
Were they nice and friendly? The salesman was friendly enough, enquiring about our needs and bringing us to the appropriate area since the showroom was huge, spanning 2 levels. He followed us around while we ignored him and then told us obvious things which were stated on the price tags already. Poor guy, we walked straight out of the place without saying "Thank You"...heh heh...
How does the store look? Decent, with nice lighting and areas for living and dining areas...spoilt only by some bad designs...
Value for money? Fair, at 1.3k-2k for fabric sofas. There are also some nice lamps at $49.

7. Funktion | Changi South
Were they nice and friendly? We think there was only one sales person. Or two. Who knows...nobody served us and we couldn't quite figure out who was working there too.
How does the store look? Quite ok, warehouse industrial chic? Lots of items everywhere in a haphazard fashion, perhaps for the GSS sale they were having?
Value for money? Affordable with the sale they were having. 1.8k and up for sofas. Otherwise nothing less than 2.5k we reckon.

8. Evov | South Bridge Road
Were they nice and friendly? Only one salesguy there, who never smiles but politely tells us to peruse and to let him know if we needed help.
How does the store look? 2nd floor is dingy with beds and chairs everywhere, and you have to manuveure a steep and high staircase to get there. The first floor is decently laid out for its small shophouse showroom size.
Value for money? Affordable with the sale they were having. 1.8-2k and up for sofas. Otherwise nothing less than 2.5k we reckon.

9. Mondi Living | Toh Guan Rd, Jurong
Were they nice and friendly? The salesmen at Toh Guan's Mondi were friendly, smiling but not all of them knew their products very well. They would state the obvious. We also went to the Mondi in Furniture Mall and Thomson but we didn't get to talk to the sales people there.
How does the store look? Nice and chic enough, a far cry from Star Furniture which they are located in.
Value for money? Yes. Not all their pieces were as cheap as Star Furniture's but for the designs and unique qualities, you can find some very good deals here.

10. Sanctuary Dian | Balestier Warehouse
Were they nice and friendly? Extremely. It's amazing to find such nice sales people and without the "cheena slant". There are only two of them and the way they juggle their customers in the store is amazing. They would rotate and come by every now and then, and were apologetic about not spending enough time with us. The guy even sends customers to the lift area to send them off. The warehouse is very old, dingy and unappealing but his enthusiasm, politeness, cheeriness and earnestness more than makes up for it.
How does the store look? Decently laid out in a medium-sized room with downlights and an open feel.
Value for money? Not very cheap, but for the designer-looking items you can furnish your house with, you are paying only a fraction of the price - a great deal indeed! As with most of the small stores, some amount of price negotiation is possible, and their prices are nett, all inclusive of delivery or any taxes. 3seater sofas are $1330 and up and L shaped ones are $1800+.

11. Novena | Paya Lebar
Were they nice and friendly? Slightly, most of the salesman here are of the ah-beng variety.
How does the store look? The usual Novena look, tons and tons of items everywhere in living and dining room layouts. It was a sunny day and with the bright white lights in the store, it was a bit too much.
Value for money? Very cheap, there are ongoing sales too and im sure you can bargain. The quality and designs are doubtful though.

12. Star Furniture | Toh Guan Rd and Thomson
Were they nice and friendly? We tried to avoid them and nobody followed us around as far as we can remember.
How does the store look? Bright and airy, with tons and tons of items, similar to Novena.
Value for money? Very very cheap, there are ongoing sales too and im sure you can bargain. The quality and designs are doubtful though.

13. Brighton | Sungei Kadut
Were they nice and friendly? A very ah beng looking guy followed us around, but he spoke politely, softly and in English!
How does the store look? Low ceilings with yellowed lights...it was quite tightly packed and we can't say there's enough place to run around.
Value for money? Very cheap but we could not bring ourselves to stay in the store for longer than 5mins.

14. The Furniture Club | Sungei Kadut and Furniture Mall
Were they nice and friendly? We cannot remember the Furniture Mall store but the Sungei Kadut one had a sian-faced salesman who tagged along behind us and told us about their GSS sale.
How does the store look? Dark with dim lighting but didn't give us the cosy stylish feel with the huge altar burning at the doorway. There was always the faint smell of joss sticks in the air.
Value for money? Not very, it's actually quite pricey for the huge sofas they were selling. Designs were ok but...

15. XZQT | West Coast Highway
Were they nice and friendly? yes, the guy was very accommodating, ever ready to give suggestions and quotes (they were having a sale). he even demonstrated the use of their signature versatile pieces of extendable tables that had great form and function. He extolled the value of leather sofas (they had many designer looking quality pieces) and apologised that he did not have the fabric ones to meet our demands. Although he knew we did not find what we want, he served us politely and cheerily until we left.
How does the store look? This is the warehouse so it looks like one big showroom with a gazillion items.
Value for money? Wow, it's pricey. Without sales, expect nothing less than in the region of $5000.

16. Living Instinct | Telok Blangah (opposite Vivocity)
Were they nice and friendly? Over-friendly more like it. The boss, this uncle, told us stories of yesteryear and of the leather sofa industry. He gave us many tips and pointers on upkeeping leather sofas and extending their lifespan to 20 years. It was good, just very luo suo...
How does the store look? A nicely lighted showroom with big glass windows.
Value for money? Get great value here for leather sofas. We're sure they are negotiable. They even have 80% off some of their items! Some of the designs beg to be ashamed. Very very bad...

17. Silver River | Paya Lebar
Were they nice and friendly? A classic case of the hard-sell salesperson. We were attended to by this aunty who spoke english to us but basically told us everything was "not bad". Even when we told her we were looking for fabric sofas and not leather, she still recommended us the (ugly) leather ones. She urged us to sit and feel the comfort while saying "this one also not bad". It was a bit tricky getting out of the store as they have many levels of showrooms and aunty did not rest till she showed us the items on every floor.
How does the store look? Bright white lights, the typical "not so stylish" showroom
Value for money? Nearly dirt cheap. Get L-shaped sofas at only $500-$800. Get an odd-looking 2 seater L-shaped sofa at $100+. This place would nearly be on par with the one in woodlands which we heard kim's colleague got a 2 seater, 3 seater, coffee table and side table for $150 only!!

18. XXX store | Sungei Kadut (sorry we cannot remember the name, it's in the white castle-like warehouse in the area)
Were they nice and friendly? The sales lady was smiley and approachable. A bit too pushy on the GST sales tactic though. She followed us everywhere even though we refused eye contact.
How does the store look? Dark with high ceilings, it looked just like a warehouse.
Value for money? Things are cheap but no, you would not want some of these scarily-overdesigned items.

19. Lifestorey | Great World City
Were they nice and friendly? Nobody served us, we strolled around and helped ourselves. We weren't really interested in talking to anybody since we wouldn't be buying anything from there anyway.
How does the store look? Neat, nice and interesting.
Value for money? No-no. Shop here only if you are into high quality at higher prices.

20. White Collection | Great World City & Harbourfront
Were they nice and friendly? Sometimes irritatingly over-friendly, following you around and asking you for your needs. The Harbourfront one has staff who look a bit more sian.
How does the store look? The Great World City outlet is very bright white, but the Harbourfront one is a bit dinghy.
Value for money? A subsidiary of Novena Furniture, this place sells value for money items as well, but with a tendency to be over-designed.

21. Seahorse | Ngee Ann City
Were they nice and friendly? Nobody served us. We think there was only one salesperson in the showroom.
How does the store look? Yellow dim lighting, fairly soothing and comfortable.
Value for money? Seahorse should be ashamed they charge that much for very ugly, boxy and hard sofas and beds.

22. SoHome | Furniture Mall
Were they nice and friendly? The salesman was smiling and friendly, but stood a bit too near for our liking...it's like you cant view the items in peace.
How does the store look? Downlights but the layout isn't fantastic. It was also weird to walk by the discussion area where the other staff were sitting.
Value for money? We didn't get a view on prices (since the guy was so near and it seemed paiseh to look when we weren't interested) but it's not that cheap and everything comes in modules so the sets in the showroom are very big.

Wiiiiii, so fun Wiiiiii!!!!

So we could not wait till Dec to buy the Wii. That's a broken promise, since we told ourselves we should wait till the house is up and ready. So we moved our TV to another part of the house (partly also to prevent father-in-law from marathon TV-watching) and set up the Wii for play area. The highly sophisticated console is amazing, able to register movements from all angles with varying degrees of strength. The games are so interactive and fun, providing a fantastic workout, and I fear we might not go out to rollerblade, jog, walk, to the gym or even have bedroom activities anymore!

Wiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!

Here's another one of our hearts' desires - the Nintendo Wii. It'd be great to have this to play at home. Apparently makes a great workout as well! =)

Price: $550

A Curly Lighted Bob

I really love this lamp that my friend designed and is teaching the kids at Christian Outreach for the Handicapped to make. I hope to have one of these special creations done by the kids at COH in my home. It’d make a lovely centrepiece.

Patience is a Virtue

alas, we might have to wait a little longer than planned to kickstart our great renovation plans. the seller has not yet found a home to move to and our first appointment with HDB has been delayed. *sigh* please pray with us for the sellers of the home to find a house soon and can get going. =) then the Great Plan will be put into action and everything will be hunky-dory!

Don't take us Seriously!

My friend commented that we sounded rather snobby in asking for gifts for the home and that they should not be recycled ones. We would like to clarify that it's really all for fun, this website that is, and the main purpose of this blog is for us to share our house furnishing/renovating experience for you to enjoy. Please don't feel pressurised into buying anything for our home. If you really don't know our style and are not sure if a particular item would suit the house, please don't give it to us. We'd rather you be happier not buying than to buy and then it's out of place. ;-)

Just have fun ok? WE are having fun!

Painting in my Mind

This shall be the inspiration for my painting. (credit note to Getty images for the image) Fluid swimming fish in a sunset hue of colours. I love the rosy tones of red, orange and yellow and I'm sure it will add a dash of intensity to my brown, black and beige home. =)

Not much floor to plan with

Here's a shot of our floorplan. Not much space as you can see, so we need to be wise about storage. There are so many things we want to do though, and the balance between budget and luxury is a juggling act in itself! Pray that we have great eye-hand-wallet coordination. =)

Buying a home is a BIG deal

When we say "BIG" we mean copious amounts of money. A flat in a choice area (fussy us, we know...) does cost quite a bit. We are both thinking of long term value of course, and ease of selling it off. And we do love the estate so much! At the moment, it would help if friends, family or foe could help to contribute to make our home a happy haven. Be it a glass, a vacuum cleaner, or an air-con, we'd be happy to receive! Do check out our lists here to ensure nobody "double buys" and also, to ensure the look and feel of our home is not compromised by bad tastes...heh heh heh...

with lotsa love and thanks,
Ally & Kim
